What are Rahway’s homes like, roof-wise?
Rahway was incorporated as a city in 1858 and sits in southern Union County between Clark, Linden and Woodbridge, with the Rahway River running through it. Its 2020 population of 29,556 was the highest ever counted. Census estimates put about 15% of Rahway’s homes as built before 1940 and nearly half before 1960. The city grew from four communities, Upper Rahway, Bridge Town, Leesville and Milton, and today also includes parts of Inman Heights and North Rahway.
Downtown, revived since the late 1990s around the Union County Performing Arts Center and the NJ Transit station, mixes older commercial buildings with newer apartments. Some buildings go back much further: the Merchants and Drovers Tavern’s earliest buildings date to 1795.
What roof problems are common in Rahway?

| Roofs facing open ground | Wind lifting shingle edges and ridge caps | Missing shingles after nor’easters |
After a river storm: is it flood damage or roof damage?
When the remnants of Hurricane Floyd crossed New Jersey in September 1999, Rahway took severe damage, and the city’s flood-plain library later had to be replaced. In storms like that, insurance treats water two different ways. Water that rises from the ground or the river is flood damage, which standard homeowners policies exclude; it’s covered only by a separate flood policy, such as one through the National Flood Insurance Program. Rain that comes in through a roof damaged by wind or a falling tree is usually handled under a homeowners policy.
- Photograph roof damage separately from basement or ground-floor flooding.
- Get the roof tarped to stop more rain from getting in; keep the receipt.
- Tell your insurer which water came from where. It affects which policy applies.

See storm damage roof repair for more on claims and emergency roof repair for what to do while water is still coming in. Re-roofing a detached one- or two-family house in Rahway needs no construction permit under New Jersey’s ordinary maintenance rule; other buildings and structural work should be cleared with the city’s construction office.
Rahway roof repair FAQ
Does flood insurance cover roof damage?
Generally, flood policies cover damage from rising water, not wind or rain through the roof. Wind and storm damage to the roof is usually a homeowners claim. Check your own policies.
Do you cover all of Rahway?
Yes. We connect callers across the city, including downtown, North Rahway, the Inman Heights area and the neighborhoods along the river.
My older Rahway house has been re-roofed several times. Can it get another layer?
Not if it already has two layers; the building code requires a tear-off first. See roof replacement.
Should I have the roof checked after a big storm even if nothing leaks?
Yes. Lifted shingles and loosened flashing often don’t leak until the next heavy rain. A quick check after a major storm catches them early.
Do I need a permit to repair my roof in Rahway?
Not for re-roofing a detached one- or two-family house. Structural work and other building types can need one.
